What makes furniture luxurious?

Comfort
When buying a luxury sofa or chair – comfort is surely one of the pre-requisites. It isn’t always, but it ought to be. Sometimes design takes precedence – but that is when furniture designers’ egos overlook the fact that most furniture is functional just as much as it is something to look at, live with and admire.

Design
Surely luxurious furniture is always beautiful to look at? Maybe this is so. And knowledgeable furniture designers will be able to create new  gorgeous forms that combine function with looks. But something can be attractive and yet not well made – so it isn’t solely about design.

Craft
How about its craftsmanship? Truly luxurious furniture ought to have skilled craftsmanship. The joints, the back, the underside, the innards should be just as well crafted as more obvious surfaces. Often it is these details that give away poorer quality furniture. For wooden pieces – look for sympathetic uses of wood – like matching the grain between different parts of the furniture, or deliberately choosing contrasting pieces.

Materials
And of course luxury furniture must be made from quality materials. For wooden furniture surely it has to be made of high quality hardwoods. There is no point in using softer woods for high quality furniture pieces. Pine might be cheaper – but not long-lasting. And as true luxury furniture doesn’t come cheap, it must be made to last.

Innovative?
I’d like to say that innovation is a key aspect of luxury furniture – but it isn’t. Although some manufacturers like Team7 are true innovators combining ecological with design with engineering with craftsmanship, there are many high quality furniture manufacturers who simply make lovely luxurious furniture without the same level of innovation.

High luxury
Perhaps the highest level of luxury furniture is when all these aspects combine into a single piece of beautiful furniture.
