Arguably the earliest piece of furniture existing was the bed. From it’s origins as a bed of straw in the Neolithic period, the first revolution was when it was lifted off the floor to avoid dirt, draughts and pests.

The earliest record of a bed was that of Odysseus who slept on a charpoy of woven rope.
